You could put in something different texture or color if you want and that might help, but i have another idea for you to consider.
That way, you can have the exact same carpet throughout your home and on the stairs.
When the stairs finally become worn and matted you will have some of the exact same carpet ready to replace the stairs with fresh new carpet.
Either way you go, you need to be sure to use a good quality pad on your stairs to make them last as long as possible.
Some people like the look of continuity some do not.
